Off-ball screening action after a post entry used to create advantages during half-court offense

What is it

Split action is when the ball is entered to a post player, followed by the passer setting an off-ball away screen on the closest offensive player not in the post.

Options

  • Screener slips the screen when
  • Screened rejects the screen when defense overplays the screened
  • Screener curls the screen when defense trails and no help is given at the basket
  • Screener flashes the screen when defense trails and l help is given at the basket

When might it be useful

4-out alignment where the team

  • Has a playmaker in the post
  • Prefers using away /off-ball screens
  • Are not able to use on-ball screens or DHO

What other variants exist

Zoom action is a variation of a high-post split action in which a pin-down screen is set and the screened player initiates a DHO from the post player.

When the closest off-ball player is in the ball-side corner, the split action is similar to the Princeton offense point series
